Military Connected Students - There is currently no reliable and consistent data available on the academic well-being of our military-connected children. Although the Department of Defense tracks children who are connected to military personnel in other ways through placement or physical examination, there is no data available to determine how well our children are doing in school.
In 2014, the Compensation and Retirement Commission made the main recommendations for changes in the practice of the Ministry of Defense. Provision 15 is the issuance of a national military student ID card.

After more than ten years of war, most children today go to school and are educated only during the war. This means more pressure on the home front due to the increased pace of operations, more frequent PCS procedures and more parental input. The Ministry of Education is considering adopting a national military student ID card to monitor the academic health of our school-aged children.

To date, 14 states have accepted the data in various forms: Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
Although these tracking programs exist independently, they are not aggregated or distributed across national borders and vary widely in the information tracked. For this reason, there is a need to collect national data in a reliable and consistent format.

Spring 2019 Orientation For Veterans & Military Connected Students
Tracking the progress of 1.3 million students in military and public schools will allow the Department of Education and the Department of Defense to better understand the challenges and needs of children in war. With better understanding comes better funding for support and services for students at home and at school.
Currently, schools can't answer basic questions about how well military-connected students do in school, graduation rates, or whether they go to college. Data collection and analysis is the only way to anticipate and predict the needs of these children.
Children connected to the army have various external complications such as frequent migrations, going to several schools, interruption of further education, involvement of parents in the war, return and other factors, which again can affect them as a student.
The implementation of a military-integrated student identification system will help teachers prepare students for a successful transition to a new school. This will also provide key performance indicators for districts to identify behaviors and processes worthy of attention and adaptation for students in preschool through 12th grade.

Parents will have an evidence-based understanding of the school district and campus. By providing military parents with good information about how war-connected students are doing as a group, they can have more confidence in their children's educational choices.
